Instrumental Music Program

Fort Street High School has a wide range of programs that support student learning and enhance social and personal development. They operate as part of the extended before and after school timetable and are designed to complement the curriculum by enriching the core learning experiences for students. All activities undertaken are listed on student reports.

Instrumental Music Program

The Instrumental Music Program (IMP) is the largest co-curricular program in the school involving three hundred students from Year 7 to Year 12, across fourteen ensembles.

The program has brought significant accolades to the school over a period of nearly twenty years.

The IMP is a parent managed co-curricular activity for which the school received a Premier’s Award in 2003. The program is entirely funded by membership fees and fundraising activities.  Participation in the IMP is in addition to the music component of the school curriculum.

The IMP continues to strive for excellence in education by providing students with a well-rounded musical education and a musical appreciation, which will enrich the rest of their lives.

Calendar of events

Conductors, Tutors and Rehearsals

On a weekly basis students have contact with some of Sydney’s finest professional musicians and music educators through ensemble rehearsals and private tuition.

For more information about private tuition please contact the IMP Director.

IMP ensembles rehearse weekly, before and after school, and at lunchtimes. Click here to view the 2019 IMP Rehearsal Timetable.

The IMP presents over 85 individual performances each year, ranging from school assemblies and concerts through to backing vocals for major international artists such as Josh Groban. Many of our ensembles are regularly selected to perform at the Sydney Opera House alongside the best groups that the state education system has to offer. Often ensembles are selected to perform for a variety of high profile occasions such as the Director General’s farewell at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, The State Literacy Conference Opening and many DET functions at selected venues. Please see the IMP Calendar for details of upcoming performances.
